My Philosophy
I believe the most important aspect of a child care provider can provide for children, is to provide love and a safe learning environment. It is important to strive for children, parents, and staff to grow and develop together in a stimulating, supportive atmosphere where everyone can feel safe and secure. It is important to offer unconditional love to the children and give them emotional support and individual attention. I believe that providing experiences which enable the children to develop into well rounded individuals is an important goal of a child care provider.
Activities should be designed to accommodate the varied needs and interest of each child. Extra attention is should be given to each child, in order to recognize each child’s weakness’s, and strengths. Work with the child to give them the best learning opportunities available. Genuine interest will be given to each individual child because I care about every child, because every child is special and deserves to be cared for. By doing this you can foster the children’s overall development. I believe it is important to strive to maintain close contact between the child’s home and school life by being cooperative with parents, and keeping professional communication.

To Establish and Maintain a Healthy and Safe Learning Environment:
Maintaining a safe, healthy, learning environment for children is the most important responsibility of an Early Childhood Education professional. Keeping the classroom safe and healthy by the practice of universal precautions, child proofing, and staff training, helps meet this competency.
Maintain universal precautions by preventing the spread of disease, and provide a safe and healthy environment. It is important when changing diapers, preparing meals, and cleaning to wear gloves. It’s also important to use a new pair of gloves each time. Even though after wearing gloves, it is still necessary to wash hands frequently. Wash hands before preparing meals and cleaning. Wash hands before and after dealing with any bodily fluids such as changing diapers, wiping a child’s nose, or doing first aid. Also remember to teach the children how to properly wash their own hands. Universal precautions also include keeping the environment clean by bleaching toys, washing floors, and using a bleach and water solution. Toys should be bleached everyday for toddler and infant rooms and every other day for preschool rooms. Infants and toddlers tend to put more toys in their mouths. Bleaching toys once a week is expectable for home use. Floors, counters, and bathrooms should be washed with a bleach solution. This bleach solution includes one cup bleach, for every two of cups water. This solution should not be strong enough to stain clothing while using. Universal precautions help keep the learning environment safe and healthy.
Child proofing keeps the environment safe so that children can learn in a safe and healthy environment. Child proofing the room includes using outlet covers, keeping cleaning solutions together on high shelves, and setting the classroom up so the whole room can be seen from every angle. Using outlet covers helps keep the children from putting their hands and toys in the outlets. Outlets can be very dangerous and it’s important to keep them covered so that the children do not get electrocuted. Keeping cleaning solutions on a high shelf is important so they are out of children’s reach. Cleaning supplies are dangerous to children and could be ingested, inhaled or come into contact with eyes, if they are not put out of reach. How the room is set up insures that the children will all be seen at the same time. This can prevent more accidents, make observing easier, and make it easier to recognize more teachable moments. Child proofing is an important part of providing a safe and healthy environment for children.
Having a trained staff helps keep the children in a safe and healthy environment. Having staff that are CPR and First Aid certified, educated about nutrition including GMO's and how to balance a efficient meal plan, and that knows the signs of child illness, should be protocol. If a child gets a cut, scrape, or falls unconscious, knowing what to do and how to handle the situation professionally can save dramatic repercussions for the child. A child can become traumatized very easily if emergency situations are not dealt with professionally. Being educated about nutrition will help determine the difference between a healthy expectable snack or meal plan, and what not to feed a child. Provide healthy snacks and lunches for the children to make sure they are getting proper nutrition. Knowing the signs of illness in children, and how to give them proper care, or finding them proper care, could save a child's life.
There is nothing more important than a child’s safety and health. By using universal precautions, child proofing, and having a well trained staff to maintain a safe and healthy environment, efficiently. All of these aspects are important for keeping the environment safe. It is impossible to provide a safe environment without each one of these.

To Maintain a Commitment to Professionalism
To maintain a commitment to professionalism, I plan to continue my research, continue my education, and carry out professional relationships with other staff and parents, and honor my position as a mandated reporter.
As a graduate of Montachusett Vocational Technical High School, I've learned the skills needed to do something amazing in this life. I plan on taking online classes for early childhood education. After graduating with an associate’s degree in early childhood development, I plan to further my education with the goal of some day becoming the director of my own center, or opening my own home daycare. I look forward to learning as much as possible through education and experiences in a child care center. I will also continue my education by taking full advantage of work shops designed to improve my skills and ideas in the classroom. I also plan to join organizations that I can learn from other teacher’s experiences.
To carry out professional relationships with both staff and parents I will conduct myself professionally in and out of the classroom. I will use my professional relationships with staff and parents as a learning opportunity and experience. I will dress professionally by not wearing revealing clothing and being completely covered. I understand that parents want their children to be in a classroom with professionals, that not only look the part but act the part as well. While working I will not release any personal information to my co-workers or parents of the children that attend the center that I work at.
To maintain a commitment to professionalism, I will honor my position as a mandated reporter. A mandated reporter is someone who works with children and is required to report when there are signs of neglect or abuse. Children depend on their teachers to ensure that their home life is safe as well and that they are getting proper care. I have also set up a page at We Love The Babies, to spread awareness about child abuse and neglect.
By furthering my education, carrying out professional relationships, and honoring my position as a mandated reporter, I will maintain a commitment to professionalism. By doing this I meet the needs of this competency.

To Establish Positive and Productive Relationships with Parents
To establish positive and productive relationships with families it is important to talk with the parents, welcome them to stop by the classroom anytime, and not to allow the child leave with any other adult. By doing these three things you can gain a trusting and positive relationship with parents. A parent will not send their child to a preschool that does not have positive and friendly caregivers. That makes it important to prove to parents, that you can be trusted with their child, and to show them what goes on in the classroom.
When talking to a parent about their child, it is important to be positive and honest. If a child had a hard day, when telling a parent you always want to start off with something positive about the child. After a positive statement, explain the child’s actions from an observation point of view. An example: “Jonny tries really hard at spelling his name but when he wrote a B instead of an N, then he threw the marker across the room. We’ll try again tomorrow and hopefully, we’ll have an easier time.” Having a parent teacher conference to inform them on the advantages of their child and what is happening in the center will keep a strong trusting relationship with parents.
Welcoming the parents to come in and visit anytime keeps the parents involved, and they leave feeling welcomed and encouraged to see what goes on in the center. Having parents involved in a classroom by inviting them to sit in for a day, will make them more comfortable with leaving their child there. Parents want to know and see the environment that they are leaving the biggest part of them at. Another way to keep the parents involved in the classroom is to have a parent bulletin board. The bulletin board should be located in the main entrance of the classroom. It should consist of a calendar with the themes of the week, upcoming themes, and a lunch menu to show what they will be eating during the day. Also, any events or special days, should be posted. The bulletin board should be changed frequently to show your interest in the parents and pride in your classroom.
Having policies on who can take home a child is important. Parents need to be able to leave their child with a caregiver and be able to trust that their child will be there when picked up. The parent needs to know ahead of time, that the child can’t be picked up by someone they didn’t approve of. A list of names should be kept in records to avoid confusion. Notices and emergency forms with information on who can pick up the child, and who call in case of an emergency, should be filled out the first day the child starts the center. These forms should only be filled out by a legal guardian. When a child becomes ill you should always contact their legal guardian before calling any other contact on the emergency form. This will ensure the parents that the child will remain at the center from the time they drop them off until the time they come to pick them up.
Parents want to have a positive and productive relationship with their child’s caregivers. Showing them that you have a special interest in their child, being positive, including parents, and having policies for emergency forms are requirements to help meet this competency.

To Ensure a Well-Run, Purposeful Program Responsive to Participants Needs
To maintain a well-run program it is important to be organized and keep up to date records. It is also important to keep a well trained staff, that continues their education. By doing these things you will be well on your way to running a well-run purposeful program responsive to participant needs.
To be more organized you can keep a binder with all the children’s records together. In the binder you may keep a weekly sign in sheet, emergency records, and payment information kept for accurate taxes and for families doing a W-10. Having a binder full of information is a great idea but you need to make sure all the information is accurate and up to date. Also, to be more organized keep a calendar of any trips, classes, seminars, and meetings that are planned. Send home plenty of notices of about these dates to make the parents aware of up coming events. Parents should have plenty of notice about trips and parent conferences to show that your center is well organized and maintain a well established program.
A well-run, purposeful day care program that is responsive to participant needs, has a well trained staff. The staff must be able to recognize what the child needs to learn before they can teach them. A well trained staff can recognize when a child has a delay and knows how to strengthen that area of development. New studies are always surfacing about child development. In order to give a child the best learning opportunities, the staff needs go to seminars and take classes to further their knowledge on the recent studies of development. Furthering education, and staying current on child development and ideas can aid in fostering new ideas in the classroom, that will be most effective.
To run a day care that is effective to the needs of both the parents and the child, organization and a well trained staff is important. Being organized and keeping accurate records will help meet the needs of this competency.
